Background
Chiyo is a fire spirited girl who all her life had to prove her worth. Born as a “Familiar” in a world of strong wizards and witches, Familiars were seen as second class to mages. Known for being animalistic and less important, Familiars are appointed to Mages once they’d earned their place amongst the magistrate for sorcery. Wizards and Witches are gifted a familiar, an imp, to do their bidding. Often appointed dangerous tasks, Familiars suffer and perish the most from their owners reckless actions. There are no laws or regulations to protect Familiars from violence and maltreatment, as they are seen as property. Despite the heavy duty of protecting and assisting their Mages, familiars are often overlooked when it comes to recognition. This however, does not deter the shapeshifters away from registering into the Magistrate for sorcery, hoping to prove themselves of their worth and abilities—and Chiyo was no different. Born with the unique ability of celestial magic, she had hoped her talents would allow her to climb out of the Familiar rank and become a true sorceress. But that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Afraid of her abilities and the threat of uprising, the Magistrate for sorcery placed a curse on her, locking her abilities away with a mark on her forehead, forever sealing away her true potential. Devastated, Chiyo reluctantly was assigned to a known wizard who took joy out of treating her like a pet, placing a cat collar around her neck.
As time went by, Chiyo realized how much her owner needed her. It was strange to see mages that were deemed so powerful relying on a low ranked second class shapeshifter to keep them safe and fight for them. They were so demanding and yet so dependent. Chiyo grew more and more rebellious of her appointed mage, which only made his treatment of her grow more and more harsh. When the cruelty grew too unbearable, Chiyo challenged her owner to a battle. Laughing in her face, the Wizard took on her challenge. If she won, she’d earn his staff, which was a symbol of rank in magic. If she lost, he was to kill her and replace her with a familiar more obedient.
To everyone’s surprise, she had won the battle and collected the staff. Embarrassed and ego bruised, her now ex owner alerted the Magistrate of his rogue Familiar who attacked him and stole his staff. Familiars attacking their mages were put down immediately. Chiyo fled from the capital City, now seen as a rogue and fugitive. Chiyo travels now, helping whenever and wherever she can. Inspired Familiars have appointed her as the first ever “Cat Witch”, slowly gaining support everywhere against the mistreatment of her race. As Chiyo travels, she learns as much as she can, from other familiars to friendly unprejudiced mages willing to help and teach her. Hopefully one day, she will be able to lift the curse from herself and reach her full potential.
